We Are Learning
Reading Workshop: We are currently in the middle of our Launching unit and learning about routines for Reader's Workshop and the different genres that students will have the opportunity to read throughout the year. Fantasy, realistic fiction, historical fiction to name a few.
Moms and dads, grandparents, what's your favorite genre??
Writing: During Writer's Workshop we have been focusing on things that we love and care about to get ideas for our Personal Narrative writing piece. We are working on developing a situation to serve as the setting of our writing piece in order to make our stories come alive.
Math: This past week, we focused on mentally adding and subtracting double and triple digit numbers using various strategies like number bonds to help break down the numbers into tens and ones. Our second math test which will cover the concepts in Chapter 2 of our Math in Focus book is scheduled for next Thursday, October 2, 2014.
Social Studies: Our first social studies unit focuses on geography and getting to know the world around us. We have been reviewing and discussing the seven continents and 4 main oceans. We viewed a compass on a map and have begun to explore directions.
Science: During science we had an "I wonder" question session. Scientists wonder and ask questions which helps them to learn and discover. Students wrote down their questions many of which we will explore during our science studies over the course of the school year.
